5 Signs that You Are a Sunglasses Expert
Run a Google search on the word ‘sunglasses’ and you will quickly discover there are tons of articles and blog posts ready for your consumption. They are written by people who may or may not have any practical experience in recommending sunglasses to consumers. And yet, what they write is taken as gospel. That is not necessarily a good or bad thing. It is what it is.
Maybe you are one of those writers. Or maybe you just find yourself frequently being solicited for fashion advice. At any rate, think about the advice you give. Are you really an expert in sunglasses, or are you merely giving opinions based on popular culture and celebrity influence?
Let us set the record straight once and for all. Here are five signs that you are truly a sunglasses expert:
1. You Know the Difference Between UV and Visible Light
The first thing that should always come up when advising people about sunglasses is UV protection. If you’ve heard it once, you’ve heard it a million times: the whole point of wearing sunglasses is to protect your eyes against UV. What many people don’t know is that UV light is distinctly different from visible light.
If you are a true expert, you know that UV light cannot be seen by the naked eye. You know that tint has nothing to do with the UV protection built into sunglasses. Finally, you know that people need protection from both UV and visible light.
2. You Know What Polarization Is
Another confusing topic to consumers is polarization. How many people do you know who own polarized sunglasses but don’t know what they do? If you’re a true expert, you know all about polarization. You know it is the ability to filter out reflected light in a specific direction so as to reduce glare. You also know why polarized sunglasses are extremely helpful to skiers, anglers, etc.
3. You Know How Branding Works
Few industries are as confusing as eyewear when it comes to branding. Genuine sunglasses experts know how the branding game works. They know that Italy’s Luxottica controls most of the high-end brands. They know that competitors like Olympic Eyewear offer their own brands that are of equal quality despite not having the same name recognition.
4. You Know that Price Isn’t Everything
Part and parcel with branding is pricing. The eyewear industry is no different from any other in that stronger brands tend to carry higher-priced tags. But as a true expert in sunglasses, you know that price isn’t everything when it comes time to purchase a new pair.
You understand that consumers do not have to spend hundreds of dollars to get a good pair of sunglasses that protect their eyes and will last for a long time. You also know that paying top price for a top brand almost always means you’re paying for a name.
5. You Know How Important Fit Is
Giving advice on sunglasses almost always reverts to giving fashion advice. But long before you get to whether or not a pair of sunglasses looks good, the discussion should center on fit. More than anything else, how well a pair of sunglasses fits determines how often they are worn.
A true sunglasses expert understands the importance of fit. Furthermore, a true expert knows what constitutes a good fit. He or she understands the relationship between frames and the nose. He or she understands how to fit a pair of sunglasses comfortably so that they don’t slide or pinch.
So, how did you do? Are you truly an expert?
